The first symptom of breast cancer for many women is a lump in her breast. But 9 out of 10 breast lumps (90%) are benign. That means they are not cancers. But if you see a lump, contact your doctor immediately.
Some women prefer to have benign removed to alleviate their concern. They may be worried that confused with other lumps that can get in the future. But if you and your doctor are confident that the tumor is benign, you do not have it removed if you do not want to. Benign lumps do not turn into cancer.
Breast cancer is a disease in which malignant (cancer) cells form in the tissues of the breast. An estimated 1 in 7 American women will develop breast cancer in their lives. Two hundred and twenty thousand American women will develop breast cancer this year. The symptoms of breast cancer are:
- discharge from the nipple (clear or bloody)
- persistent tenderness of the breast
- pain in the nipple
- swelling or mass in the armpit (lymph nodes)
- inverted or flaky nipples
- an amount that can be felt, no matter how small
- swelling of the breast
Sometimes there are no symptoms of breast cancer when in the early stages. If you notice a lump, or experiencing something unusual, you should report the symptoms with your doctor as soon as possible. Performing a monthly breast exam own is one of the best ways to notice any changes in your breasts.
6 Breast Cancer Symptoms that Most Women Do not Know About
- Breast that is warm to the touch. A breast that always feels warm and sometimes hot to the touch is a symptom of inflammatory breast cancer, a dangerous and rare type of the disease.
- Flat or inverted nipple. A flat or inverted nipple is also a symptom of breast cancer. This does not include an inverted nipple since birth.
- A chest that is often itchy. If you have itchy breasts or nipples, talk to your doctor. These are both symptoms of breast cancer.
- The skin around the breast or wavy looks like an orange peel. Breast and surrounding skin may take on a wavy appearance, looking like an orange peel. Many women are too shy to show a doctor, thought is cellulite or obesity. This is not the case.
- Swollen or breast that does not change with the menstrual cycle or larger size. It is normal for a woman to breast swollen and tenders during a normal menstrual cycle, but if it constantly; they should be evaluated by a physician. Women should be aware of a sudden breast size increase.
- Chest that red or blotchy. A breast that is red and blotchy, even with a rash-like appearance should be evaluated by a physician. It is a symptom of inflammatory breast cancer. Inflammatory breast cancer is a cancer that often undetected by a mammogram and breast self-exam.
