Throat cancer, which occurs when cells begin to divide in the throat in an out of control rate, is associated with a number of symptoms. Many of the symptoms of throat cancer are also associated with less severe disease or other medical problems.

Many of the symptoms of throat cancer involve breathing, swallowing, and eating. The patient may have respiratory problems, the development of high tricks breath sounds, have difficulty swallowing or the feeling that he or she has a lump in the throat, which inhibits eating and drinking. Voice changes, such as hoarseness or changes in pitch can accompany throat cancer, and throat may feel sore, painful, or tender. Another symptom of throat cancer is the enlargement of the lymph nodes in the throat.
Other symptoms of throat cancer include frequent headaches, recurrent sinus infections, a persistent sore throat or cough, pain or paralysis of the facial muscles, earaches, and unexplained weight loss. The symptoms can be subtle at first, and is attributed to a more general malaise or a sore throat resilient. More severe symptoms may bleed from the nose or coughing up blood and the formation of lumps in other areas of the body, suggesting that the throat cancer metastasis has begun.
A patient who suspects that he or she has throat cancer will be examined by a doctor physically examine the throat, an interview the patient, and medical tests such as biopsies and imaging studies of the throat looking for signs of abnormal growth. If a cancer is detected, a pathologist will determine the type of cancer involved and the stage of the cancer and the patient sees an oncologist to discuss treatment.
Cancer of the throat can be treated with chemotherapy and radiation, the prognosis varies, depending on the cancer, the patient, and when the cancer is caught.
